Mr. Malcolm Lee King, Jr.  of Emporia, Virginia passed away peacefully on September 29, 2021 in Greensville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  He was predeceased in death by his parents Malcom Lee King Sr., and Jessie Harris King; His wife of 56 years, Marjorie Baird King; and his Sister Jean King Scott.  He is survived by his daughter Michelle King Edmonds, and her husband Scott and his grandson, Ryan Scott Edmonds of South Hill, Virginia.  He is also survived by his brother-in-law J.E. Baird and wife Cordie or Colonial Heights, Virginia; sister-in-law Catherine Baird Hartley of Charlotte, North Carolina, and sister-in-law Mary Carter Harris Roberts of Freeman, Virginia.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews along with a host of close friends who are like family.  Malcolm was born in South Boston Virginia on May 30, 1939 and grew up in Brodnax, Virginia.  He graduated from Brunswick High School in 1956 and then went to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he was a member of the Highty-Tighties. He graduated in 1961 with a degree in distributive education.  This started his life-long love for all things Virginia Tech!  Malcolm was known by most people as “Mack”,  “Big Mack”, or “Mack Daddy” by his grandson Ryan.  If you were from Brodnax you knew him as Malcolm Lee.  Mack had a wonderful professional career always doing what he loved.  He started his career as a teacher in Isle of White County High School and went on to have an extremely successful career in sales at several pallet manufacturing companies throughout Virginia. He was also an adjunct business professor at Southside Virginia Community College in Emporia at night for six years teaching business classes.  He ended his professional career working for 26 years as a solicitor for Valley Proteins, Inc.  Mack believed in education and the role it played in transforming people’s lives.  He dedicated much of his life in service to Virginia Tech as an active participant in the Alumni Organization and served as President of the Emporia Hokie Club for many years.  He was very civically engaged in his community and in the state.  He served as the state president for the Virginia Jaycees and was active at the local level.  He received a lifetime membership as a Jaycee for his service and leadership.  Mack was a member for over 40 years of the Greensville County Ruritan Club and served as President and was well known for his BBQ chicken fundraiser every May.  He was a member of the Emporia Country Club for 47 years and served in various leadership positions including President and Chairman of the Membership Committee.  Mack was the Chairman of the Greensville County Planning Commission for 26 years and was the President of the Virginia Pork Festival for over 25 years and was involved with the festival from the beginning.  Mack loved his family, his friends, and life.  At his request, a Celebration of his life, his family, and his friends will be held on October 30, 2021 from 6PM to 9PM at the South Hill Country Club, 3061 Country Club Road, LaCrosse, VA 23950.  Memorial Contributions may be made to the Greensville/Southampton Hokie Club Mack King Scholarship, P.O. Brenda Allene Crockett Fuller

It is with great sorrow her family announces the unexpected passing of Brenda Allene Crockett Fuller on October 7, 2021 to be welcomed by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, along with many loved ones who predeceased her. She is survived by her fiancé, Robby Butler, her daughters, Heather Marie Fuller, Ashley Nicole Fuller, and Cindy Butler, her mother and father, Sam and Barbara Crockett, her brother, John Crockett, and many beloved aunts, uncles, relatives and friends.

Brenda graduated from Greensville County High School in 1992 and served in the U.S. Airforce after graduation. She enjoyed making crafts, especially blankets, wreaths, and delicious pickles for her family and friends!

The most important thing Brenda will be remembered for is her capacity to love. She truly loved without expectation of being loved in return.

Words cannot describe how deeply Brenda will be missed. She loved the Lord and our loss is heaven’s gain.

A graveside service will be held at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery, on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, starting at 1:00 P.M., with Rev. Bobby Griles officiating.

Aubrey E. Wray, 76, of Jarratt, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2021. He was the son of the late William S. and Helen F. Wray and was also preceded in death by his brother, Morris G. Wray.

A lifelong Greensville County tobacco farmer, Aubrey was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and enjoyed playing softball and later coaching.

Aubrey is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dolly R. Wray; two sons, Gregory D. Wray (Linda) and Christopher C. Wray (Torri), daughter, Courtney W. Gordon (Brian T.); five grandchildren, Michaela West (Ronnie), Cody Wray (Victoria), Collin and Marshall Wray and Mason Gordon; and a great-granddaughter, Evelyn West.

The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, October 11 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd., Jarratt, Virginia.

A private committal service will immediately follow.

Timothy A. “Tim” Gainey, 53, passed away Friday, October 1, 2021. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mckenzie Cherie Gainey and his father, Gene Gainey. 

Tim is survived by two daughters, Allison G. Lynch (Kurt) and Logan Gainey; two sons, Timothy A. Gainey, Jr. (Joslyn Smith) and John Lee Lewis Gainey; two grandchildren, Kynlee and Oaklen Lynch; his mother, Joan M. Gainey; two brothers, Tony Gainey (Pam) and Mark Gainey (Marsha). 

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, October 8, 2021 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax RD, Jarratt, Virginia. The family will receive friends at Tim’s home immediately following the service.

Lorene Ferguson

Lorene Ferguson, passed away peacefully in her home on September 24th, 2021. She was 93 years old. Lorene was well-loved in the small town of Jarratt, VA. She was a devoted friend of God, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and knew no strangers. She was greeted in heaven by her beloved husband of 62 years, Ernest Ferguson, her son, Keith Ferguson, her grandson, Chuck Kasper, precious puppy dog Romie, and many beloved family members. Lorene was wonderfully devoted to her children Ernest Wayne (Diane), Brenda Turner, and Keith Ferguson (deceased). She was a beloved Granny and leaves behind six grandchildren; Ryan Ferguson, Lauren Youell (Blanton), Jaime Trevillian, Matthew Turner, Kelsey Dunn (Michael) and Rob Turner as well as six great-grandchildren; Maddie, Claire, Jaxson, Jamison, Jenevieve and Eli. She is survived by her sister Dale Jones and sister-in-law Annie Laurie Jones, and many nieces and nephews.

She was a devoted and longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church. Her passion for traveling was fulfilled when she met some of her best friends at the Senior Circle from Southern Virginia Regional Hospital. She signed up for almost every trip and volunteered to send out the newsletter.

Lorene had a compassionate spirit whose passion was caring for and protecting others. She was a Sheriff's Deputy for Greensville County from 1977 until her retirement in 1990. In her 13 years of service, Lorene qualified as a sharpshooter. A heart of gold, outside of work Lorene was always making delicious dinners and desserts for her loved ones. Her famous chicken and dumplings recipe will forever be cherished.

She was often making baked goods for her Friday night line dancing at the Chattahoochee Country Club. So devoted to making each dance that she had her own reserved table and became an honorary member of the band. The Country Club gave Lorene many good memories and friendships, including her darling, David Zitta. Lorene danced until the very end.

The family would like to thank her caretakers Jill Bryant, Vicky Conwell, and Angie Smith from the hospice workers of Kindred Hospice.

A celebration of life will be held at 5pm on October 9th at the Chattahoochee Country Club, 138 Roanoke Rapids Road Gaston NC. Pastor Andy Cain will lead us in scripture reading and prayer. In her loving memory, family will present eulogies. Lorene's favorite things consisted of line dancing and eating good food. Please join us in honoring Lorene by doing her favorite things and sharing memories.

Jeremy Bradforde “Brad” Wilson, 42, of Emporia, passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2021. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenny Wilson and grandparents, Lawrence and Lucy Wilson and Burton Edward Grizzard.
Brad is survived by his wife, Tina Wilson; son, Joseph Joyner; mother, Elizabeth “Liz” Grizzard; maternal grandmother, Joanne B. Grizzard and his canine companion, Sophie “Beardo”.

Carolyn Moss Fajna peacefully went to be with the Lord at her home on September 3, 2021 at the age of 81. She was born on April 28, 1940 in Barley, Va., to the late Peter Russell and Essie Pollard Moss. She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, John Ludwig Fajna and her grandson, Mason Bayne Taylor. She is also preceded in death by her elder brother Clyde Acey Moss and elder sister Page Moss Marable. She leaves behind her daughters, Denise Barnes (Collins), Trina Taylor (Mike); sons, J. Ludwig Fajna Jr, Timothy Fajna (Jill), Dathan Fajna (Heather); eleven grandchildren Edward Barnes (Sara), Joshua Barnes (Jennifer), Ethan Barnes (Kaitlyn), Jeremy Barnes, Chelsea Taylor (Steven), Michael Taylor (Samantha), Caroline Taylor (Kameron), Sarah Paige Fajna, Joseph Fajna, Madison Fajna (Hunter), and Ian Fajna; the six Barnes great-grandchildren, Lilian, Connor, Olivia, Cooper, Henry, and Emma; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her faithful companions Spot, Penny, Milo, Lizzy, and Roadie. She was a lifelong member of St John Lutheran Church where she served as choir director for multiple years. She worked closely with her husband on the farm till he retired and worked at Farm Bureau for 15 years. The funeral service, led by Pastor Stephen Bocklage, was held 11 a.m. Monday, September 6 at St. John the Baptist Lutheran Church. Interment at the church cemetery. Jerry W. Allen, Sr., was a loving husband, daddy and papa. He died peacefully in his home with his wife by his side on September 8th. He was preceded in death by his parents Gilbert and Ollie Allen.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 37 years, Lois P. Allen, children, LeAnne Rawlings (Chris) and Jay Wiley, grandchildren, Logan Warren Rawlings and Christopher Allen Graham Rawlings. Children from previous marriage, Amy Gordan (Kevin), Bubba Allen, and Brandi Powell and their children. Also left are his brothers Bobby Allen (Daphene), Clinton Allen (Pat), Dennis Allen (Cecilia) and Danny Allen (Dawn). His fur baby Louie and grand fur babies, Rocky and Lily.

Lester Johnson “Les” Grizzard, Jr., of Richmond, VA., formerly of Springfield, VA., died September 1, 2021, at the age of 81. Les was born December 9, 1939 in Greensville County, VA., to the late Lester Johnson Grizzard, Sr. and Sallie Taylor Grizzard.  He was preceded in death by brother, Quentin T. Grizzard, sister, Emo-gene Medkift, Evelyn Harris, and Eloise Tuck. He is survived by sisters, Amy Bradley (Johnny) of Petersburg, VA., Peggy Powell (Ben) of Portsmouth, VA., and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Les was a 1958 graduate of Greensville County High School, served in the Army as an M.P. with an honorable discharge April 30, 1969. He resumed his career as a Bank Examiner in Richmond and then Trust Officer for Riggs National Bank in Washington D.C., until retirement. Les earned a Business Degree from American University. Was named American Legion Springfield post 176, “legionnaire of the year” for 2007. In the commander’s citation he was lauded for his volunteer work at the Veterans Administration Medical Cneter in Washington D.C., where he visited every Friday and most Wednesday mornings. Also noted was his work with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, Homeless Veterans Clean Up Day, and welcome home Committee. Les Served on the membership committee and as District 17 assistant baseball chairman. He truly loved serving the veterans. Les enjoyed baseball, taking an annual trip to Florida, for the major leagues spring training for many years. He was a longtime member of Fountain Grove Baptist Church, Emporia, Va. Les was loyal to family and friends. He will be missed by all that knew him. The family would like to thank cousin and friend, Glen Allen for his dedication and care for Lester in his last years.

A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday, September 7, at 2:00 P.M., at Fountain Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Grizzard officiating. Interment will follow in church cemetery.

Earl Wayne Gillam, 69, of Jarratt, Virginia left for his eternal home on Tuesday, July 27, 2021. A loving son, husband, father, and grandfather, he leaves his family behind to cherish his memory and continue his legacy of love. Preceded in death by his father, James Lewis Gillam, mother, Mabel Lewis Gillam, and brother David Gillam, Wayne is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years Connie Winfield Gillam, daughter Carol Gillam Glanville (Peter), son Steven Wayne Gillam (Lisa) and two grandchildren, Nikolas and Addison Gillam. Wayne also leaves behind three sisters, Dianne Gillam, Judy Matthews, and Martha Gillam and one brother, Curtis Gillam. Wayne dedicated his life to serving others and taking care of his family and friends.

Visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. Saturday, July 31 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd., Jarratt, where the funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 1. Interment will follow at High Hills Memorial Cemetery.

Anthony Ryan Caruso

Anthony Ryan Caruso, 31, of Emporia, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, July 27, 2021. He is survived by his mother, Alina Bogdan; father, Anthony A. Caruso; sister, Cynthia D. C. Bogdan (Brian Mallory); nephews; Antonio Bogdan and Jayden Mallory; maternal grandmother, Karen Lehman (Lothar) and aunt, Kathleen Lawson and a number of cousins.

A memorial service will be scheduled by the family at a later date.
